WASHINGTON – A federal court on Monday dismissed the Federal Trade Commission’s antitrust complaint against Facebook, a severe blow to government efforts to disband the social media giant.

The Federal Trade Commission’s December complaint was inadequate and did not contain enough facts to support its claims that Facebook had a monopoly on personal social networks, a judge from the US District Court for the District of Columbia wrote in a 53-page publication Opinion.

The judge, James E. Boasberg, said the case was not dismissed. However, he said the agency had to resubmit the complaint within 30 days.

A spokeswoman for the FTC and a spokeswoman for Facebook did not initially comment.
