With coronavirus cases on the rise again in the US, the country is also vaccinating faster than ever.

US Covid-19 cases

More than 63,000 new Covid-19 cases are reported daily in the US, based on a 7-day average from Johns Hopkins University data. That number is up 16% over a week.

On Sunday, the White House chief physician, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the recent surge in coronavirus cases is due not only to new variants of the virus, but also to travel and the easing of business restrictions on infections.

“What we’re likely to see is due to things like the spring break and the withdrawal of mitigation methods you’ve seen,” Fauci told CBS ‘Face the Nation on Sunday.

US Covid-19 deaths

The US reports a weekly average of 970 Covid-19 deaths per day, according to Johns Hopkins. For the first time since November, the average daily death toll was below 1,000 for seven consecutive days.

US vaccine shots administered

As the number of cases increases, so does the rate of vaccinations. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported three consecutive days of more than 3 million vaccine doses administered, including a record of nearly 3.5 million shots reported on March 27.

The 7-day average vaccine doses given is currently around 2.7 million shots per day.

US percentage of the vaccinated population

To date, more than 143 million doses of the Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the US, according to the CDC.

Approximately 28% of the US population have received at least one dose of vaccine, and 15.5% are fully vaccinated.

Of those 65 years old and older, 72.4% received a dose and 48.4% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.
