Federal officials are urging Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., For responses to the apparent personal use of thousands of dollars in campaign funds.
In a letter from the Federal Election Commission to the treasurer of Boebert’s re-election campaign in 2022, four Venmo payments totaling more than 6,000 US dollars were asked for.
FEC filings show that payments were made between May and June for what was described on the forms as “Lauren Boebert’s personal expenses mistakenly billed to the campaign account”. Submissions then determine that “expenses have been reimbursed”.
A Boebert spokesman told CNBC that personal expenses have already been reimbursed but did not say what the payments were for.
“The Venmo fees were personal expenses that were mistakenly billed to the campaign account. The refund has already been made and will appear in the filing for the third quarter, ”said Ben Stout, Boebert’s deputy chief of staff and communications director, in an email to CNBC on Wednesday.
The FEC’s letter also states that “if the disbursement (s) is found to be personal use of campaign funds, the Commission may consider further legal action”.
The “Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics” campaign in Washington marked the letter from the FEC on their Twitter account. A separate ethics group filed an FEC complaint against Boebert, requesting an investigation into the more than $ 20,000 worth of mileage refunds it received from its 2020 campaign.
Former Republican MP Duncan Hunter was initially sentenced to just under a year in prison for misusing campaign funds. He was later pardoned by then President Donald Trump.
Boebert has been under scrutiny since its election in 2020.
Although she has said that she is not a believer in the QAnon conspiracy theory, several reports have linked her with it.
Boebert was one of more than 140 Federal Republican MPs who voted for the election to be repealed. She said late last year that she planned to join the conservative Freedom Caucus.
