The rain is still damaging NASCAR’s top event.

The Daytona 500 on Sunday 2021, which was hit by a nearly six-hour rain delay, drew an average of 4.83 million viewers, Fox Sports told CNBC. It marks the lowest-regarded Daytona 500 in the history of the race. Around 7 million viewers watched the 2020 event.

Front Row Motorsports’ Michael McDowell saw his first career win and the Harley J. Earl Trophy. He was only the eighth driver to take his first career win in the race. Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott finished second.

Sports Media Watch reported that the event drew around 8 million viewers prior to the delay, which occurred around 3 p.m. Eastern.

Last year’s Daytona 500 also suffered from a rain delay that pushed the event off to a second day. Audience ratings also suffered, and the 2020 race reached an average of 7.3 million viewers on both days. The 2019 and 2018 races had an average of 9 million viewers, but that was less than 11 million viewers on average for the 2017 and 2016 races.

The 2021 Daytona 500 suffered an early crash involving 16 cars after the first 15 laps before the weather delay. NASCAR resumed racing at around 9 p.m. Eastern Time. It ended just after midnight.

The 2021 Daytona 500 brought some early storylines into the race, particularly around the 23XI Racing Team with owners Michael Jordan, Denny Hamlin and driver Bubba Wallace. The number 23 Toyota car that Wallace was driving failed before the race and had to start in the rear.

Wallace made history as the first black driver to lead a lap (129) in the race. Wallace was involved in the late crash with one lap remaining, finishing 17th.

Hamlin, who drives Joe Gibbs Racing, also started in the rear – unconventionally. Hamlin attempted to win his third Daytona 500 in a row, which would have been a record, but finished fifth instead.

NASCAR will be looking to recover this weekend with its Daytona Road Course event, which will take place February 19-21 on Fox Sports’ FS1 channel.

Meanwhile, NASCAR also announced that Alvin Kamara, the star of the New Orleans Saints, has joined as a car sponsor.

Kamara’s The Big Squeezy juice bar franchise has signed up to sponsor JD Motorsports’ # 6 Chevrolet car Ryan Vargas in Saturday’s Super Start Batteries 188 race at the Daytona International Speedway circuit.

The terms of sponsorship were not specified.

Kamara said sponsoring the car was an opportunity he couldn’t lose. With its logo on either side of Vargas’ car, Kamara can build brand awareness for its juice bar franchises, which are primarily located in Louisiana.

“I did a little research on Ryan as an individual and JD Motorsports and was impressed with what I read,” Kamara said in a statement. “I’m looking forward to playing a small part in what you already have in front of you.”

Kamara, who finished second among running backs with 16 touchdowns in the 2020 National Football League, signed a five-year extension for $ 75 million last September.
